What Our Clients Are Saying

How DNA Testing Works

Step 1 Schedule

Schedule your appointment by phone or online. Once the appointment is confirmed, a small deposit is required to secure your time. You will also receive your client forms to complete before your visit so the appointment can run smoothly. We may not be available to answer calls before 10:30 am but we are able to text you for any questions you may have.

Step 2 Sample Collection

At your appointment, samples are collected in a private and professional setting. Most DNA collections take about 20–30 minutes.
Please avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum for at least one hour before your test. If you are coming in for fasting lab work, you may need to fast longer depending on the test ordered.

Step 3 – Laboratory Processing & Results

After collection, the samples are sent to the laboratory for analysis. When results are ready, you will receive them through the secure client portal and/or by mail. Most DNA test results are available in about 2–3 business days, though turnaround times can vary depending on the specific test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are DNA tests?

Modern DNA testing is extremely accurate when determining biological relationships. Most paternity tests provide results that are over 99.9% accurate when the tested man is the biological father. Laboratories compare specific markers in the DNA of the child and the alleged father to determine whether they match. Purpose DNA & Health collects samples carefully to help ensure the laboratory receives clean, reliable specimens for testing.

How long do results take?

Most DNA test results are available within two to three business days after the laboratory receives the samples. In some cases, turnaround time may vary depending on the type of test being performed or if additional participants are involved. Once results are ready, clients typically receive them through a secure online portal and/or by mail.

What is the difference between legal and non-legal DNA testing?

A non-legal DNA test, sometimes called a “peace of mind” test, is used for personal knowledge. The samples are collected but do not follow court documentation procedures.

A legal DNA test follows a strict chain-of-custody process. Identification is verified, proper documentation is completed, and the samples are collected by an authorized professional. This type of testing can be used for court cases, child support matters, immigration, or other legal purposes.

Do both parents have to be present for a DNA test?

No. In most cases, a DNA test can be completed with just the child and the alleged father. However, including the mother can sometimes help strengthen the results by providing additional DNA markers for comparison. If the mother is unavailable, the test can still be performed.

What type of sample is used for DNA testing?

Most DNA tests use a simple cheek swab collected from the inside of the mouth. This process is quick, painless, and only takes a few minutes. In certain cases, such as prenatal paternity testing, a blood sample from the mother may be used to analyze fetal DNA during pregnancy

When can a prenatal paternity test be done?

A non-invasive prenatal paternity test can usually be performed as early as the 7th to 10th week of pregnancy. The test works by collecting a blood sample from the mother and a cheek swab from the alleged father. The laboratory analyzes fetal DNA that is naturally present in the mother’s bloodstream to determine paternity.

How accurate is prenatal paternity testing?

Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing is highly accurate. Most laboratories report accuracy of over 99.9% when the tested man is the biological father. The test works by comparing the baby’s DNA found in the mother’s bloodstream with the DNA of the alleged father. Advanced laboratory analysis allows the lab to identify matching DNA markers to determine whether a biological relationship exists.
